Suckage + Commission Complete

Ugh, I forgot that I had to make four comics for Ensuing because I'll be gone so long. It (obviously) doesn't long to draw them, but it does take a long time to come up with half-passable ideas. Well, half-passable at best. I really wasn't in the mood to make comics last night. Then I opened up the scans in photoshop and reached for my tablet just to discover... my pen was missing. Again. I seem to lose it a lot. Usually it's just sitting around, but this time I really can't find it. I hope it's just mixed up with my stuff to pack.

Because my pen is missing, I can't color my oofuri_exchange piece like I wanted. Ugh. Oh well, I was thinking about using watercolors too.

A couple weeks ago, I was working on the Cal High Marching Band shirt, like I do every year. This year's theme is Zorro. I talked to the teacher, got some ideas, sketched them out and sent them to him. I haven't gotten a response yet. That was almost two weeks ago. I leave in two days. I wanted to get this shirt design done before I left, because by the time I get back, school will have started and Marching Band will be in full swing. I'll see if I can just clean up my favorite of the possible designs before I go. Baah.

Last night I was unnaturally exhausted and had a slight headache, so I went to bed at 10:30. I was hoping to sleep off the headache, but no luck. I woke up at 2am in the midst of dreams of headaches and... Kyoto? I have no idea. I tried to fall back asleep, but the dreams kept getting stranger and stranger. Finally I got up to get some medicine. BUT, I can't take medicine on an empty stomach because it makes me nauseous, so I had a small piece of bread. Unfortunately, my mom woke up, so she came downstairs to check on me. She ended up staying up really late to make sure I was okay, so I feel pretty bad about that. =( After I took my medicine, I went back upstairs and tried to read to pass time quicker while waiting for the medicine to kick in. Unfortunately, nausea kicked in first (ugh, why) and I ended up just sitting up in bed for a while. It was well past three by the time I fell asleep. And then my genius body decided that 6:45 was a fine time to wake up. Uggghhhhh. I feel mostly better now, but I have these weird aches behind my eyes and occasionally around my head. Maybe I'll try to take a nap this afternoon.

The person that commissioned me (it was actually a "free sketch raffle" from the webcomic panel at Fanime), wanted her character Ionee in something like the stand-up of me destroying a city I had brought to the last couple webcomic panels I was on (I gave that away at for the raffle too, I need to make a new one for next year now). I couldn't get the poses I wanted right, so I had to settle for easier ones. I didn't want to risk shading it, so it's just lineart.

The final product is three layers deep. There are two layers for the city and one for the "speedlines" in the background. There are two Ionee stand-ups and a sign that says, "AHAHAHAHAHA!!!" that sits in a slot behind the large Ionee's head.

Here's a shot from a higher angle. The way the scene balances is a little strange. The front angles out a bit, while the rest leans back. The front of the city is attached to the back with a little platform that can be widened or shortened depending on what you want to put there.

This is the back of the scene. The biggest mistake I made with this project was using tag board that was red on one side. That was just a dumb move.

I'm thinking of taking commissions for stand-ups like these in the future. They're not that hard (the hardest part is cutting everything out, ugh), but they're fun. When I finally put this one together for the first time, I got a huge rush of pride. It's not the best, but I had spent so much time on it finally seeing the finished product was really nice. I don't know though, I'll have to think about it when I get back.

My Itsuki and Kyon figures came in a week and a half ago. They're great and I've been having a blast putting them in fruity poses. Poor Kyon. Right now Kyon is riding the Itsuki-sled. He's facepalming, of course.
